Christopher Columbus: Good Guy or Dirty Word?

Read the article I gave you in class. Instead of answering the five question on your syllabus, I want you to give your general perceptions of the article. What is the main point? What is the author's main argument? Do you agree or disagree? Why? Please take some time to carefully consider these questions.

This article is on Christopher Columbus and the widely varying perception of his character and deeds in the Americas. The main point is that opinion is extremely polarized between those who consider him a hero and great explorer and those who see his genocide and misconceptions as to his location and consider him, er, not so good. The author stays completely neutral, presenting both arguments and seeming to resolve that it was a great historical event, but also a cruel but fairly commonplace genocide and example of slavery. I'd tend to be a bit more against Columbus than the author probably, but none of that especially matters at this point. My existence would possibly have been threatened if that hadn't happened, after all.

This article illustrates how, in the couple of years before the anniversary of Colubus' voyage to the new world, disputes are arising over how his so-called discovery should be viewed. In retrospect, as the author points out, his conquest which resulted in the complete destruction of the Taino people shouldn't exactly be glorified. But although he quotes Native American activists who want all celebration of the date to cease, he doesn't quite seem to agree that the discovery was wholly bad, and that Columbus was not the one to introduce slavery and violence to the region. I personaly think that the facts speak for themselves. Yes, our society came about as a long term result of his discovery, but I think it can be agreed that more pride could be taken in it if he had some common decency and took it upon himself to learn from his differences with the natives. Of course, 15th century society itself was not overly sympathetic to differences in culture....

This article shows the arguements that occurred in the years before the 500th anniversary of Columbus's explorations. The points brought up are that yes Columbus started a trend of westward exploration but he also started the trend of slavery and mistreatment of the natives. The author does not pick a side but rather presents a counter argument for both sides. I feel he does however lean more towards the side against Columbus. This is also the side that I agree with. I do agree with Victoria that in his time and culture he did not know much better than to do that, but if he was going to take on the hero role he should've treated the natives in a more heroic way. I do believe that Columbus started the trend of mistreating the natives but that does not mean that it had to be continued. That the faults of the explorers that followed him. I mean thank goodness we dont wear light up sketchers with velcro anymore. Not all trends have to be followed.

The article "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" by John Elson is one that examines the way certain people or groups view Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus). The author does not really argue anything. He only explores the two opposing sides of Columbus. One saying that is was a "man of great and inventive genius" and the other saying that he was a horrible man who brought about nothing but terrible things. I personally think Columbus' ways of invading lands was harsh, but it was the norm of the time period, so we should not hold that against him. I agree with Nate when he says that our "existence would possibly have been threatened" if Columbus hadn't done the things he did. So in conclusion I say yes, Columbus was not very nice to the people he met in the new world, but without him being mean we would not be where we are today.

This article explains the different views and conflicts brought about by Christopher Columbus' infamous voyage in 1492. The author's main point, as Nate said, is that people's opinions on Christopher Columbus are "extremely polarized"; People either believe that Columbus was a hero or they believed that he brought about slavery and mistreated the natives. The author seems to sway towards Columbus' side because he makes a point to bring up the fact that the Aztecs and Inca empire already had a degree of slavery in their culture that was not enforced by Columbus. I understand where the author is coming from, but personally I believe that Columbus would have been more of a hero had he, as Victoria mentioned, showed more decency towards the natives. His mistreatment of the natives brought his reputation down from a hero to a greedy man because, honestly, there was a lot more land he could have explored that did not already have people occupying it.

In this article, the author compares and contrasts the reactions to Christopher Columbus. The main idea of this article is how heroic he used to be compared to today's views on Christopher Columbus. Five hundred years ago, Columbus was the man. He started the expanison toward the west. He made this world a different place. Today, he causes nothing but contraversy and he isn't even alive to defend himself. The more research we do about our history, the more conflicts we have. It seems what was first thought to happen changes. The five hundred year anniversy of Columbus' very first voyage to the New World is in two years and the U.S. and Latin are already preparing for the worst. The anniversy has even already sparked religious battles. When I was a kid, Columbus did not seem like a bad guy. But I've learned now that he did mistreat the natives and started the idea of slavery. By his actions of mistreatment and slavery he made the Taino population become extinct. No wonder people think he's a bad hero. But back then he did not know any better. It didn't seem bad to them. The author compares and contrasts our thoughts on Columbus. He really doesn't give us his opinion, he just reports the opinions from both point of views.
I agree with Andrew and Victoria on this. He might have started the trend of mistreatment but we definately did not have to follow it. And thank God Andrew, we don't have to wear velcro shoes anymore. :) This is blair again..i forgot my password to the other account.

With the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the new world just two years away, there is much debate about how people should celebrate the day, if at all. In John Elson's article, "Good Guy or dirty Word?" he discusses the varying opinions on the controversial topic. Some declare Columbus a hero while others argue he is nothing but a "Grasping fortune hunter." It is hard for me to say whether I agree or disagree with Elson because he stays impartial throughout the article. If I had written the article I would have been harsher on Columbus, giving my opinion on him rather than just listing everyone else's.

The article is on Christopher Coloumbus and the different views of whether or not he is a "good" guy. The point is to show that Columbus can either be consisdered a great explorer or basically a murderer for his mistreatment of the Natives. The author presents both opinions and reasons for conclusions of Columbus' character. The author shows that while Columbus was a great explorer, he was also fairly cruel and unfair to the Natives. I don't really have anything against Columbus becuase i probably wouldn't exist if he hadn't been a great explorer. While i dont agree with how cruel he was, he wasn't the only explorer that mistreated Natives.

The article is mainly one big argument. Theres two different sides, one side believes that Columbus was a great hero and explorer, the other side believes he was a monster that demolished a race through rape, murder, and enslavery. I disagree that Columbus was a hero. All he did was land here, say it was Asia, and kill a bunch of people. If he had come over and tried to learn from the natives and befriend them instead of slaughtering them then things could have been a lot different.

I think that the article "Christopher Columbus: Good guy or Dirty Word" explains how different people view Columbus Day and who Columbus was and is in American History. Throughout the article the author shows pros and cons of both sides of the argument but never chooses a side. I don't think Columbus deserves as much credit as he gets for discovering America simply because he didn't.

The article 'Good Guy or Dirty Word?' presents the argument that Christopher Columbus wasn't the heroic figure that he was portrayed as in the past. The author tells of groups and councils that wish to revise the whole idea of the festivities given in his honor entirely. They believe that a celebration is not appropriate for a man who was in part responsible for genocide of Indians. The author gives the facts of the wishes of these groups without actually presenting his personal opinion. My beliefs on the subject are as follows: If Columbus was responsible for deeds so terrible, than celebration of his name is definitely inappropriate.

The article, "Good Guy or Dirty Word", is written about Christopher Columbus, and the different opinions about his discovery of America. The main point of the article is to show the two different sides of the argument,(good and bad). The author never takes a side. He just gives both sides of the story. I think that Columbus is getting way to much recognition for the discovery of America when he really didn't know he had discovered it. His discovery also brought pain and hardships to the native people of the America's.

This article is on Christopher Columbus as an ecological despoliation and a murder of Native people. The main point in this article is to show how divided people in the Western Civilization have become on the part of Christopher Columbus discovery of the New World. The author does not present his own argument but others' opinions on Columbus being called a good guy. The author stays relatively present throughout the article. But he does mention that the discovery in 1492 was an important historical event and celebrating that day is just fine. I agree to that Columbus's discovery of the New World is an important historical event. But calling Columbus a Good Guy is out of the question. He ordered his soldiers to burn villages, steal gold, and murder men, women, and children. This does not sound like a good man. But looking back at Columbus's intentions was only to find a different passage to Asia by sea. So without Columbus's dedication to exploring the ocean and the New World I probably would be in England right now.

The Article "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" addresses the issue that some people believe that we should not celebrate Christopher Columbus day. There obviously is alot of cultural bias surrounding the subject. The author mostly presents negative views of the holiday, so he must believe something along those same lines. Maybe if we replaced the name with another explorer that wasn't quite so harsh people would be satisfied. Possible Amerigo Vespucci day, i mean after all he is the one who actually first set foot on American soil. And the country is named after him for petes sake! I would much rather have an Amerigo Vespucci day than a day about a crazy italian person who sailed for spain. But as long as holidays are national, there will be some kind of criticism fromm someone.

In "Good Guy or Dirty Word?", the author shows two very different views on Christopher Columbus. While one side lifts him up to be a hero, the other calls him a rapist and murderer among other things. I tend to lean more towards the viewpoint against Columbus simply because he devastated an entire population. Though, I do see where the other side of the arguement comes from. If it weren't for Columbus actually sailing to the New World, there is a possibility that it could have never been discovered.

Beth said...

This article is about the two ways Christopher Columbus is viewed. He is either seen as a hero for discovering the New World or as a horrible man who brought terrible ideas into it. I agree with both sides in some way. He was the first to sail to America, but he also did do terrible things to those people already here. I agree that those who came in after him didn't have to follow his trend, and that the natives already used the idea of slavery. Christopher Columbus does get more credit then he deserves, after all he thought he had landed in Asia, but he does deserve a little bit of it for finding the continent, even though he didn't know it.

In this article the writer talks about different points from which people think Columbus' voyage was good or bad. I believe it was a little of both because Columbus found the New World, which we live in today, and he killed all the civilizations that lived here. I think it is more of a bad deed because he started looking for gold when he arrived and that clouded his vision.

In John Elson's article he debates wether or not "the quincentenary of 1492 [is] a time for penitence of jubilation". Elson's main point is that Columbus wasn't such a great guy like many people think, some even say that he was worse than hitler. I think it's alright to celebrate the discovery because without his discovery we might not have the nation that we have now, but I understand why people don't want to celebrate the time. I see how people like and dislike Columbus.

This article displays the opposing sides that arose aruond the 500th anniversary of Colombus's voyage. Some say that Colombus is a hero, and should most definitely be celebrated, while others claim "[his]legacy to the Indians... was rapine, servitude, and death." I can see points of interest in both arguments. Yes, Colombus did start the exploration of the New World, he was a hero in that way. But he left some negative impressions as well. Enslaving natives, what was he thinking??? I think this guy totally got lost in the whole "get rich quick" idea and forgot about his vision.

The article "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" presents the argument of how people and the world view Christopher Columbus. The author never states his opinion about the issue instead he stays completely bias. This helps the reader to completely base their opinion on the evidence in the article. Although the author doesn’t have a personal argument, each side does. One side thinks that Christopher Columbus is the All-American children's hero while the other side thinks that just speaking his name is considered a dirty word. The author however does present more evidence supporting the side that dislikes Columbus then those who do not. My opinion about this article is that the issue is not important. Christopher Columbus came to the "America" 500 years ago so therefore Christopher Columbus's actions are in the past. You can not change things in the past. I think it is very foolish that people are debating over this issue. There are a lot more important issues in the world then if Columbus was a mean man or not. We don't cancel President' s day because John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Franklin D. Roosevelt had affairs or that because President Nixon was impeached. So if we were going to take Columbus Day off the calendar because of his wrong actions then we would have to take off President's day as well. I disagree with Andrew Lewis when he says that Christopher Columbus started the trend of mistreating the Indians because people in biblical times mistreated their slaves and who is to say that people didn’t pick up the trend from the Egyptians. So my words of advice is that John Eilson get a life and focus on writing articles that are truly important.

The main point of the article is that there are many different perspectives that people have concerning Christopher Columbus's discovery of the Americas; some believe that he was the cause for the exploitation and desecration of Native Americans' cultures, while others see Columbus as a paragon of ambition and discovery, one of the most significant and important men in human history. Today, the viewpoints concerning Columbus still cause a certain degree of contention as people struggle with how to approach the holiday that commemorates Columbus's discovery. Some groups think it should be a day of solemnity and penitence while others may wish to jovially celebrate it. The author's main point can be summed up in his final sentence, "even sweeping apologies for histroical sins are unlikely to satisfy the angry advocates of belated justice for Native Americans, some of whom would settle for nothing less than canceling the festivals entirely." The author believes that both groups have some validity to their stand points about Columbus, but that people should seperate myth from fact (Since one the "anti-Columbus" groups uses the idea that Europeans introduced slavery to the New World when the Aztec and Incan empires had existed upon the idea of forced labor long before 1492). I agree with the author. I think that there are some groups (especially certain ethnic groups) that have a vindictive spirit and feel jaded (and sometimes rightly so) that will endure a few historical inaccuracies if it meets their own personal agendas.

This article includes arguments that occured a few years before the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's explorations. The main point of the article is opinions of Christopher Columbus, is he a hero or is he a horrible man that brought slavery?? Columbus did bring out more exploration, but he did mistreat the natives. I agree with Andrew that slavery didn't necessarily have to continue, later explorers could have stopped it, and that if Columbus wanted to be more herioc, he would have acted in a more heroic way towards natives. The author doesn't have a main argument, he shows both sides of the question ("Good Guy or Dirty Word?"). He shows that Columbus's explorations were a great point in history, but he did mistreat natives. I agree that in his time he did not know better, but I also agree with Victoria and Sophie that he could have showed more decency to the natives.

The main point of this document is to give an alternate view of Christopher Columbus as opposed to mainstream society. The author's main argument seems to be that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus today because of what kind of man he was. I agree with the author because Columbus was a great guy. He killed Indians raped and enslaved them. He didn't discover anything new, at this point in time everyone new the world was round so he was exceptional or anything and he actually thought that he was in Asia, so no i don't think we should celebrate Columbus day

John Elson, the author of "Good Guy or Dirty Word?", explores the varying opinions of Christopher Columbus and his exploration of the Americas. The main point of the article is to inform us of how differently the world now views Columbus. At one point in history, he was viewed as an amazing explorer and the founder of the Americas. Now the perception of the famous explorer as changed quite a bit. Columbus was once considered one of the most influential people in history and now he is seen as an enslaver and the cause of Indian genocide. The author makes a good argument for both sides. Elson's main point is that Columbus did do some good while also doing some bad. Yes he explored the Americas (even though he had no idea that he was even in America), but he also enslaved and killed many of the Indians he came in contact with. Columbus has caused a lot of controversy throughout the world. I agree and disagree with Elson. He gives Columbus more credit than he deserves though. I personally think that Columbus was incompetent and quite ignorant. I know he explored the Americas and all, but lets get real. The guy didn't even know he was in America. My perception of him is now even worse because I now know the awful things he did to the Indians during his exploration. Columbus in one word was crazy!

This article gives the present day perceptions of Christopher Columbus. The author provides the good and bad of each side without favoring either. Personally, I think he deserves some credit, but not his own holiday. First of all, he never set foot on American soil. Second, the land he did find, he caused chaos and distruction. We are taught in elementary school that hes a hero but really he was just a guy looking to make some extra money. As for blaming him for slavery, I think thats taking it a bit too far. As Andrew said, just because he suggested slavery, doesn't mean that everyone had to go beat down and take an islander with them.

By the way this is Warren, I forgot my password.

Christopher Columbus is a dirty word because there are facts left and right that he committed acts which now would be considered down right barbaric. Although he did aid in the finding of the Americas, although not the United States as many Americans believe, he came onto the land of the indians and killed them immediately or by disease. So when we celebrate Columbus' finding of America we are really celebrating the careless deaths of hundreds or thousands of natives. Although the author does remain neutral, truly there seems to be far more evidence that Columbus swept out a humongous percentage of the population in Hispanola and other islands. Columbus will always be seen as a hero in this nation by why celebrate the murders of America's original inhabitants.

This article is on Christopher Columbus and his either ludicrous or humane ways of treating people depending on who you are talking to. Me, I could care less cause my descendents were Italian anyways and I wouldn’t mind living in Italy.

This article's purpose is to make readers like us pick a side. The author portrays the issue neutrally, giving both sides, the good and the bad, legitimate arguments on whether or not Columbus is a hero. Lets put it this way, if I were a native on the day of Columbus's 500th anniversary, I would run around with a spear in my hand and stab everybody who even thought about rewarding him in celebration. He nearly ruined the whole Indian race and didn't even discover America, yet he is a hero in every youngster's mind. I mean, I will get out of school or whatever it is we do on his day, but there is no way I will thank him for finding this country. Seriously, it would have been found sooner or later if it wasn't for him so I think it is time we let him go.

While this article is seventeen years old, and Columbus’ sail across the ocean blue is five hundred and fifteen years old, the debate whether Columbus was, well, a “Good Guy or Dirty Word” is obviously still going strong. Elson’s article made this point pretty clear by listing opinions from both sides of the argument while staying neutral throughout his entire article. Mainly, Columbus’ acts where either seen as horrific or needed. And while I would usually wonder what the point in debating something that has already happened is, I was given a rude awakening in class. In elementary school I was told that Columbus was a great explorer and didn’t just, Bam! “Oh, dear, helmsman have we hit something?” find America. His so called discovery of the new world was accidental and shouldn’t even be given to him, since somebody over in Europe was smart enough to point out that, um…that’s definitely not Asia, man. And if it was Asia, I’m sure that some ruler or somebody over there would have been pretty mad at the way their people were treated. That is, if it was even Asia. Columbus managed to bump into a piece of land, destroy an entire tribe, and probably start the persecution of Indians. Yes, this person should definitely be given his own holiday, not to mention a couple of places named after him, and oh, yeah, credit for discovering the New World. (Sarcasm for anyone who didn’t get that.) And by the way, Mackenzie, the author would be completely non bias if he had no opinion…not bias. And who’s to say what’s important? This article was written at a time when the anniversary was coming up and it was a major issue for some people. The debate isn’t all about exactly what Columbus did, but how people portray his role today.

This article is about different views on Christopher Columbus and his discoveries and actions in the Americas. The author, John Elson, is a seemingly neutral person in the argument. He uncovers the unknown to some people by using details like the island of Taino becoming instinct in less than 75 years thanks to Columbus and his crew visiting. He makes most people realize he wasn't a noble explorer but a cruel murderer.
I agree with Nate's point that we probably wouldn't exist if history hadn't happened the way it did.

The main point of the article appears to be showing just how broad the spectrum is regarding opinions of Christopher Columbus/Cristobal Colon. The author himself presents no particular opinion either way, but rather seems to want to focus on how the passage of time and the various groups of persons to which the commentators belonged influenced their perceptions of a single person. When the author does take a stance, he merely gives the nod to both groups and choses a middle ground. I personally agree that Columbus really doesn't deserve as much credit as he is given. Yes, it is worthwhile to take note of what he did in regards to exploration, but does he really need a holiday?

Jenna Vee said...

In the article, "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" it reflects the controversy that stands as our countrie's "discoverer" and the truth behind the real matter. The author, John Elson states facts on the matter between giving Columbus credit for the discovery of the new world and the treatment of the Native Americans. The author does not really specify on his argument other than he seems to accept points. More or less I think that he is indifferent on the matter but at the same time he is against all of the controversy stirring up. I think that Elson thinks it is a little out of hand with the Hispanic Americans and the Environmentalists input on the anniversary. With that, he also seems to think that the slavery and genocide is a downside to the holiday, it is sad to think that our first basis of a country was lead by a greedy, cruel man obsessed with gold. I agree with the author because I'm mostly indifferent about the issue but contrary to that I do believe someone else deserves credit for the discovery of America. Columbus did not even set foot on American soil. I also question his morality and the treatment of the Natives of our newborn country.
I agree with Andrew though... yes the fact that Columbus suggested slavery is horrible... but it is a common fact that humans have somewhat of a freewill, it would be anyone's decision to follow through with his suggestion. Whoever participated is just as guilty the person who came up with idea. The other point is that today things are much more different than in the fifteenth century, the world was a different place and when Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 his mindset reaching land had to be, survival of the fittest. Any man would be selfish and greedy.
Yet again I do not agree with the Columbus holiday, I believe someone else should get the credit.

And if it were up to me, personally I would choose Amerigo Vespucci day ; )!

This article is about how people's ideas on Christopher Columbus differ greatly from what he has done in the America's. The point of view is of a neutral bystander. John Elson wrote this article to inform the audience of what Christopher Columbus has done. I really didn't realize what Columbus did to the Indians. It was insane how much destruction he caused and how many lives he destroyed. I agree with Frenchie that instead of Columbus imposing on the Indians he could of just explored other places where he would not have disturbed them.

The nature of Christopher Columbus' effect upon the New World is met with ambivalence, and remained highly controversial on the eve of the 500th anniversary of his first voyage. Advocates of Columbus praise his "ambition" and "discovery" of America; however, many others label him as the bearer of genocide, disease, and slavery into the New World. The article highlights the heated debate amongst those who consider Columbus a heroic figure and those who consider him a murderer; though the author takes care to present both sides of the case, it must be noted that the article lists, in tandem, a string of the negative effects that Columbus wreaked upon the New World, awknowleding the school textbook's skewed view of the way Columbus changed history. I believe that Columbus did indeed drastically alter the course of history, but wiped out great civilizations as well. To clarify, I believe that name "Columbus" is the representation of a symbolic whole for all European conquistadors at the time, as Columbus was not a single juggernaut but the head of a conglomerate of like-minded conquerors.

This article, "Christopher Columbus: Good Guy or Dirty Word?" is about the extremely different opinions of Christopher Columbus in different countries and cultures. Obviously, by the title, the main point is that there are two very opposite opinions to be had about this man. Was he a saint that discovered the new world? Or a terrible slave driver? The truth is, we can never be exactly sure of the man's character, but what we do know is that he died thinking he had discovered land that he did not. The author leans more toward the "dirty word" side because he speaks more of the bad opinions held about Columbus than the good. I must admit that I agree with the author more, but he does do a good job by not showing his opinion "too" much by representing both sides of the argument very well. Columbus did do bad things, but I think I agree with Andrew when he said that he just may have not known any better. Though we can't change the past, we can certainly change our opinions of such a celebrated historical figure.

In "Good Guy or Dirty Word?", the author is revealing to us that there is another side to the so-called hero, Christopher Columbus. The author doesn't take sides he's just giving us information. On Columbus Day we are to remember how good of a man he was and how he discovered the Americas. Throughout history we have made discoveries that he is neither the discoverer of the Americas nor a nice man. Columbus was quite the opposite. He introduced the idea of slavery and wiped out almost the entire population of the Taino people. As for the matter about discovering the Americas, we still should give him credit for at least finding the land, even though he thought it was Asia. The 500th aniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the New World is coming up in 2 year, theres going to conflicts about it no matter what because of the so many opinion from all the countries. I still think we should celebrate Columbus Day, but my perception of him being a good guy has definitely changed.

The main point of this is article is the dispute between the opinions of supporters and non-supporters of Christopher Columbus during his voyage to the west. The author brings out the good and bad of his exploration. The good being the new trend of westward exploration. The bad being the mistreatment of the natives and introduction of slavery to the new world. The author gives both arguments neutrally. I do not agree with Columbus methods of harshness to the natives but he did begin its trend and that is a reason for a dispute about his voyage.

The main point of "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" is describing the misconceptions that were harbored about Christopher Columbus being a hero, and the backlash in public opinion that has taken place relatively recently. The author describes both opinions, but seems to feel that both extremes are excessive. I agree. Though Columbus's treatment of the Indians was certainly bad, he was far from the only explorer to treat them badly. It's important for people to know that these great explorers were in fact quite flawed, but going on and on about how horrible they all were isn't going to change what happened.

Christopher Columbus has been known as the great discoverer of America for over the past 500 years. This article disputes that reputation while at the same time giving Columbus the credit he deserves. The author doesn't really seem to have an opinion about the argument. He just gives the ideas about the opposing sides. One believes that Columbus was a horrible, savage man who exploited Native Americans for their labor while others still believe him to be a saint. I think Christopher Columbus was neither of these, but just the average explorer for the time period who only did what he thought was right.

well the article is about the varying views of Christopher Columbus and his coming to the new world. some people feel he was a great explorer and such wile others see him as a crazy man who killed people and had no respect for the cultures of the people he met on his voyages. i feel that Christopher acted as most European would have acted and should not be blamed unjustly. the native people were treated unfairly but its over now and they need to accept it. there is no need to hate Columbus more than any other European so instead of hating him the descendants of those native people should hate europe. i personally choose to not take sides.

The article "Good Guy or Dirty Word?" was about how people felt about Christopher Columbus' discovery of the "New World". Some felt that the discovery of modern day America was a wonderful notch in world history however others felt that because of Columbus' discovery many people died. In my opinion, Columbus did not start nor did he anticipate the torture and harsh treatment placed upon the Native Americans. Some people felt that the discovery of North and South America was beneficial and others felt it was genecide and cruelty!

This article is obviously about Christopher Columbus and labeling his actions towards the natives that he conquered as evil and not worthy of celebration. The author sees the explorer as a prime example of genocide, mistreatment, and destruction of the Indian race.
